New Integer Linear Programming Models for the Vertex Coloring Problem

چکیده
The vertex coloring problem asks for the minimum number of colors that can be assigned to the vertices of a given graph such that for all vertices v the color of v is different from the color of any of its neighbors. The problem is NP-hard. Here, we introduce new integer linear programming formulations based on partial orderings. They have the advantage that they are as simple to work with as the classical assignment formulation, since they can be fed directly into a standard integer linear programming solver. We evaluate our new models using Gurobi and show that our new simple approach is a good alternative to the best state-of-the-art approaches for the vertex coloring problem. In our computational experiments, we compare our formulations with the classical assignment formulation and the representatives formulation on a large set of benchmark graphs as well as randomly generated graphs of varying size and density. The evaluation shows that one of the new models dominates both formulations for sparse graphs, while the representatives formulation is the best for dense graphs. 1998 ACM Subject Classification G.1.6 Optimization: Integer Programming, G.2.2 Graph Theory: Graph algorithms, F.2.2 Nonnumerical Algorithms and Problems: Computations on discrete structures

The facility location problem is a strategic decision-making for a supply chain, which determines the profitability and sustainability of its components. This paper deals with a scenario where two supply chains, consisting of a producer, a number of distribution centers and several retailers provided with similar products, compete to maintain their market shares by opening new distribution cent...
متن کاملAn L1-norm method for generating all of efficient solutions of multi-objective integer linear programming problem
This paper extends the proposed method by Jahanshahloo et al. (2004) (a method for generating all the efficient solutions of a 0–1 multi-objective linear programming problem, Asia-Pacific Journal of Operational Research). This paper considers the recession direction for a multi-objective integer linear programming (MOILP) problem and presents necessary and sufficient conditions to have unbounde...
متن کاملA comparison of integer and constraint programming models for the deficiency problem
An edge-coloring of a graph G1⁄4 ðV ; EÞ is a function c that assigns an integer c(e) (called color) in f 0;1;2;...g to every edge eAE so that adjacent edges are assigned different colors. An edge-coloring is compact if the colors of the edges incident to every vertex form a set of consecutive integers. The deficiency problem is to determine the minimum number of pendant edges that must be adde...
متن کاملOn the extremal total irregularity index of n-vertex trees with fixed maximum degree
In the extension of irregularity indices, Abdo et. al. [1] defined the total irregu-larity of a graph G = (V, E) as irrt(G) = 21 Pu,v∈V (G) du − dv, where du denotesthe vertex degree of a vertex u ∈ V (G). In this paper, we investigate the totalirregularity of trees with bounded maximal degree Δ and state integer linear pro-gramming problem which gives standard information about extremal trees a...
متن کاملApplying Convex Integer Programming: Sum Multicoloring and Bounded Neighborhood Diversity
In the past 30 years, results regarding special classes of integer linear (and, more generally, convex) programs flourished. Applications in the field of parameterized complexity were called for and the call has been answered, demonstrating the importance of connecting the two fields. The classical result due to Lenstra states that solving Integer Linear Programming in fixed dimension is polyno...
